"Delta 35-7670 stacked dado set" 2009-12-23
By Shawn D. Peterson (Webster, MN)
This is an excellent dado set. It has flexible setup with the various choppers and shims. It makes beautiful cuts that are flat bottomed and crisp, very clean side wall cuts. I do fine cabinetry with this blade, it does not disappoint. I used a Sears adjustable wobble blade before this, and it made atrocious cuts by comparison. I could never set the width quite right, and it chewed the wood away like a rat rather than the nice surgical cuts the Delta blade makes. Clearly, this is the difference between a $30 blade and a $150 set like this. I didn't want to spend $280 on some of the high end dado sets out there, so I bought this one as a middle ground expecting some minor flaws I'd just need to live with. I have been pleasantly surprised, not only are there no flaws in the way this dado cuts, but it is easy to use, set up, and the thickness table in the instructions is very handy and serves as a great reference. This blade gets 5 stars from me, I'm not sure what spending another $100 would get me. As a side not, the case is pretty good. Mine has the flimsy wing nuts that broke too, but it still works, and the blades are great.

"Very good product at a great price" 2009-09-18
By Woodworker (Stratford, CT)
I've been shopping for a stacked dado set for some time now, but couldn't seem to find something with a good rating at a decent price point....until now. I had not seen Delta blades advertised much, but I took a chance based on other reviews. I have not been disappointed. Although I've only used it a few times, so far the cuts have been clean, with almost no tearout. The set is boxed really nicely in a sturdy plastic case with secure hold-downs for all the blades and spacers. I haven't used it on plywood yet, but cuts across the grain in solid hardwood have been excellent.

 "Nice dado set" 2009-04-24
By G. Bounds
This is my first dado set so I can't compare to others but I am very happy with this product. I was unable to find a more complete set in the price range as this one. I like the case that it comes in, makes it a lot easier for storage when not in use. Everything is packaged inside in its own spot. With the shims to the 4 tooth wing cutters to the 24 tooth blades, this set compares to ones over $200. Very Happy with purchase.

Excellent tool. A wide range of spacers for very accurate setting of dado width, and all are easily accessible in the mounting case. I'd rate this set as one of the best I've reviewed.

By Waltman01 (Fla.)
I chose this set from the several that was listed.

1st- number of teeth on blades.

2nd- Price

3rd- Packaging

Have not been sorry for my choice. It has given me very clean cuts. The metal shims are sooo much better than the plastic shims. The package is very good - except for the plastic nuts used to secure the blades. One was broken when received. If it had metal wing nuts would give it "5 star" rating.

 "Handy and neat" 2009-11-13
By William H. Sedgwick (Indiana)
This dado set is just right for handyman-level woodworkers. Its size allows you to change it quickly and to make adjustments after a trial run. The set comes in a neat folding case that can be hung up on the shop wall for easy retrieval. Best of all, this dado set is inexpensive, so that the amateur, occasional cabinetmaker, who doesn't do woodwork for a living can still afford to build bookshelves and other casework for friends and family.

I was surprised at how well this worked.. If you've used a stacked dado set before, the setup is just as easy as any other.. chippers are solid and well marked... nice variety of shims that come with it... well written instructions... I've only used it on some 3/4in MDF and it held up very well...

"Best dado set on the market" 2009-08-10
By Andy (New Jersey, USA)
This is my third Forrest product (my first was the WWII, then the Chopmaster, now the Dado King). Forrest is top of the price range in all categories of blades, but also the best quality in my opinion. The Dado King cuts bottoms that are smooth as glass, and tear out is literally non-existent. But as other reviewers here have mentioned, the dados/grooves aren't true 90 degrees. There are little Batman ears at the corners of the dado. But that is intentional, and the instructions that come with the dado set explain that. Basically, those little raised corners are what help make ultra clean sides and bottom to the groove and minimize tear-out at the end of the cut. I had a Freud SD208 Super Dado (see my review on Amazon for that)set for $90 or so, and it got the job done, but the bottoms were far from flat and there was a good amount of tear out. It was worth spending the $250 or so to upgrade to the best (Dado King)

 ""Smooth Across the Grain"" 2006-03-22
By Robert L. Carter (Lakewood, CA)
With out a doubt the most difficult dado to cut is a cross cut of laminated material.

Most moderately price stacked dado sets cut smooth accurate dados with the grain and if you get an upper priced set you can get a smooth bottom as well. But if you turn the material 90 degrees every blade and chipper had better be `balanced' or you're going to get `chipping'.

The Forrest Dado King is a cut above the norm. It's a well `Balanced' tool that makes a clean smooth dado in either direction. With the grain it almost like using a wide blade and it's smooth across the grain as well.

"Forrest 8" Dado Set vs Freud 8" Super Dado Set" 2003-03-10
By Bob Feeser (Springfield, PA USA)
Forrest makes a clean sweep in the awards ceremonies. Their Woodworker II took top honors in Fine Woodworking Magazines run off of blades. Close behind was the Freud at a quarter of the cost. Excellent for both blades on smoothness of cut, but the Forrest earned an excellent on tearout, whereas the Freud earned a very good. Well I bought both, and found the Freud to cut a surface so smooth that it was glass like. If I was going to put a finish on it, I would rough it up with 200 grit to improve the adhesion, it was that smooth. Also the Freud had absolutely no tear out, not even a little bit. Perfect is the word here. So why did I buy the Forrest Woodworker II also? Because everybody was raving about it. Forrest makes great products.
On the Dado set, I noticed the reviewers stating that their was a tiny ridge at the bottom of the dado cut, created with the Forrest. The Freud has similar results. Oddly enough the Freud creates a perfect edge when making finger joints and the like, even though when you look down into the pocket, their are miniscule ridges in the cut. Comments that the end result on the Forrest have me concerned, stating that the edge is not perfect. Is this an example of more expensive must be better syndrome?
I bought the Freud Super Dado set based on my earlier experience with their standard saw blade vs the Forrest. I'm glad I did. No matter what you buy, a good old fashioned sacrificial piece of scrap sandwiched to your work piece is your best guarantee against tear out when working with expensive woods.
If you look at the Amazon sales rank, the Freud outsells the Forrest 4 to 1. Of course anything that is less money, sells more quantity, but I just can't get beyond the "perfect" performance of the Freud. How do you improve on that?
This is not a dig on Forrest. They make first class products. Just something to consider. I hope this was helpful.

The review below notes that the bottoms of the dado are 'not flat'. Even though he still gave it four stars, I think it's important to note that this is normal for the Forrestt and was not a defective blade. The ouside blades have a scoring profile on alernate teeth that does give tiny 'batman ears' at the each corner, when the dado is viewed on end. This is why the set cuts so well in lamanated materials. But it's true that when making box joints and the like, where the profile of the dado is exposed, they will be visible.

 "Works for me" 2009-08-07
By oldman2002 (Burlington, KY)
I wanted a dado set to do some rabbeting and dado cuts. This sounded like a good deal. I read all of the reviews and saw enough positive to buy the product. It worked great for me so far. I don't expect I will use them daily but so far - so good. The cuts were clean and with a sacrificial fence, the cut could be completely accurate (practice on a scrap piece to get measurements perfect). The box arrived in fine condition (although that really has no bearing on the usability of the product). I thought trying to line up teeth with gullets was a little tough - when tightening they spin but it worked great.

 "off by 1/64"" 2009-07-26
By Ziggy Q. Bozo (Philadelphia, PA USA)
I've tried two of these dado sets, and in both cases one of the cutters was larger in radius than other. This makes a visible "step" in the bottom of the dado, with one side about 1/64" lower than the other. The two sets were purchased years apart, so it seems to be an ongoing problem. The Mibro dado set is good enough for rough work, or to hog out most of the material so you can finish with a router or plane.

 "Pleasantly Surprised" 2009-06-01
By Jay Pierce (WILLOW SPRINGS, MO USA)
After all the gripes and complaining about what kind of box these are packed in, I was a bit leery about the true quality of the blades. But I was indeed pleasantly surprised to find out my doubts were unfounded. They have turned into a true pleasure to run. A bit more complicated than my last set but then too they are about twice the quality of cut and precision. I have yet to have to add any of the well made shims to correct the cut size. I would, and will if need be, buy these fine blades again. Oh, by the way... The box they came in? Perfect condition and a great added bonus as far as I am concerned.

When I read the other reviews I wasn't sure what to expect but for the price I decided to give it a shot. I don't know why the box the dado is in seems to be such a big deal because that has nothing to do with how good the product performs which is very good. It fulfills all the needs that I purchased it for and would suggest that if a person is looking for a dado that performs well and is a very affordable price then this is the one for you. Sure the box is'nt very well made but that is not what you buy it for.

Enhance the quality of your dadoes with Freud's SD508 Eight-Inch Super Dado Set with Anti-Kickback Design. Designed to produce smooth, chip-free dadoes and grooves every time, this set is designed to take on a wide range of materials, from hardwoods to laminates. For exceptional precision, the blade width can be adjusted in 1/32-inch increments, while the included shim set allows for even finer adjustments.

Razor-Sharp Blades for Smooth, Splinter-Free Dadoes
The perfect dado set for the fine cabinetmaker or weekend woodworker, the Freud SD508 produces dadoes and grooves that meet with flush, even edges. So you can be assured of precise cuts every time, the set is equipped with precision-grade features, starting with two proprietary razor-sharp outside blades.

These high-quality eight-inch, 24-tooth blades with 5/8-inch arbors cut dadoes and grooves that are clean, flat, and virtually splinter free. Cuts made by these blades are accurate the first time, saving you from making repeated passes over the same workpiece.

Flexibility for Cutting Hardwoods, Veneers, and More
The Freud SD508 fits all table saws and radial-arm saws and accommodates a wide range of materials, so you can keep it on hand from project to project. Use it to create dadoes and grooves in hardwood, softwood, chip board, plywood, and laminate (not recommended for non-ferrous materials).

Adjustable Dado and Shim Set for Achieving Perfect Width
Producing the perfect dado is often reliant upon finding the perfect blade width. Designed with that mind, this set virtually doubles the number of slot widths available. First, its adjustable dado allows exceptionally fine-tuned adjustments in 1/32-inch increments. It also features a handy shim set for those jobs that call for even finer blade-width adjustments.

And for greater versatility, the set's six chippers include a unique 3/32-inch chipper along with four 1/8-inch chippers and one 1/16-inch chipper. These chippers' four-wing design is a step above the common two-wing design of most chippers. This means your chippers will work efficiently to remove waste material and smooth the edges of your work pieces.

Anti-Kickback Design for Safe Operation
The quality of this dado set is enhanced by its anti-kickback design, which gives you an added margin of safety while you work.

MicroGrain Carbide Tips for Long-Lasting Performance
So you can get maximum performance out of this set, the blade components are constructed with Freud's TiCo Hi-Density Carbide. This means the blades can withstand numerous sharpenings and still retain their superior precision. And a Tri-metal Brazing process gives the blades impact resistance, so they last for the long term without dulling (a condition that can cause torn wood and uneven cuts).

"An expensive tool for special purposes" 2009-03-31
By Carlgo (Carmel Valley, CA)
My first dado cutter was an ancient Sears non-carbide wobble type. It was pretty useless, of course, and years later I sprung for this Freud set. It was somewhat cheaper than the Forrest product, so this is what I chose.

I am happy with the quality of these blades. They are extremely thick and rugged, obviously good quality. Mine had no trace of rust or damage.

They certainly do a nice and safe job. I cannot say that the bottoms are perfectly smooth, but they are flat. The side blades do a nice job of not splintering the wood. Needless to say that they are a huge step up from the usual beginner-level of dado cutting.

A warning to first-time users: dado blades are a pain to install, no matter the brand. To really get the widths set correctly you have to make a test cut, take it all apart, play with shims and do it again. Wide widths on underpowered saws have to be done in stages. You will want to do all of your grooves at one time and not switch back and forth. Dado cutting demands good planning and careful set-up.

I like the case. It is sturdy, easy to use and very useful.

Many woodworkers use various router set-ups to make grooves and there are times when that makes sense, but for those perfectly sized grooves and clean cuts nothing matches a good dado set. If you do this kind of work, then this set is a good choice. If you want to spend more, then certainly the Forrest dado set would be a very nice choice indeed.

Surprisingly, the blades and chippers lost that perfect sharpness in fairly short time. To be fair, I was using a lot of ply and particle board then, and they don't seem to have gotten any duller since. While they didn't stay as sharp as my other Freud blades, they still work fine, even in my under-powered table saw. Still, that and the not perfectly smooth groove bottoms lose this set a star.

I would like to find a place that could do a good job of sharpening and radiusing them. They look like they could be resharpened many times as the carbide is thick. This is all part of the Industrial Life, so we have to deal with it.

I have this set in the 6" size, and the less expensive 8" in the professional series. While the 6" does seem to hold "slightly" tighter tolerances IT DOES NOT MAKE SMOOTHER BOTTOMS than the 8" set AND the tolerances are so tight on the shaft that sometimes it takes up to 30 mins. and lots of cussin, to get multiple chippers off the motor shaft. Save urself time and money with the 8" professional set........

 "Great blades, poor packaging" 2009-01-15
By Jason Wiles (United States)
Most of us consider a $200 set of table saw blades to be quite an investment. Certain things are expected with a purchase like this. Packaging that is the exact same as what surrounds a barbie doll is not one of them. My $100 cordless drill has a thick case with secure latches and solid support for the drill. Imagine the disappointment when I opened the amazon box and discovered a flimsy plastic case that looks like it should contain a toy. No big deal I thought, until I opened the case and found a broken plastic clam shell surround, with paper thin clam shell discs separating the blades. Now I read some reviews from folks who commented positively on this case. Seriously!? This is dollar store packaging. Indeed, the same stuff your take-out meal is packed with is the exact same material your new $200 stack dado is surrounded by. Thank goodness the blades were OK and are outstanding. Sharp, heavy, well made, with minimal batman ears on the cuts. Blades certainly worthy of a solid, secure case and surround. The only reason I didn't give this 3 stars or lower is because of the quality of the blades, which is what really matters. If you are planning on using this set on job sites you better plan on building a custom case for them as this one won't last a farting spell. I already have plans to construct them a real storage case, however for $200 I shouldn't have to.

"The Performance of the SD508 Dado Set is Impressive" 2008-10-31
By Richard N (United States)
I am in the process of removing the contractor installed shelving in my wife's laundry room, and I am replacing them with a whole bunch of base cabinets and wall cabinets that I am building. These cabinets will occupy the entire length of two adjacent walls.

The cabinet boxes are built out of 3 / 4 inch Oak laminate plywood. The cabinet side panels and back panels all have a 3 / 4 inch wide and 3 / 8 inch deep dado to receive the cabinet bottom and a 3 / 4 inch wide and 3 / 8 inch deep rabbit to receive the cabinet back.

I made the dados and the rabbits with a brand new, right out of the box Freud SD508 Super Dado Set. The resulting cuts were spectacular. I was more than pleased. As a matter of fact I was really excited to see the beautiful cuts this dado set made.

The cuts were clean. There was no chipping of the laminate, no tear out, and as near as I can tell, the bottom of the dado was perfectly flat. The dado set cut through the plywood with ease. I didn't have to apply any more force to the piece then I would have if I were doing a simple rip using a single blade.

These stellar results were repeated time after time on all the cabinet back panels and side panels. I realize that this dado set was right out of the box and therefore the blades and chippers were probably the sharpest they will ever be, but if the exceptional results I got on this project is any predictor of how this dado set will perform over time then I know that I made a very good purchase and the money was well spent.

"can't believe this has so many 5 star reviews" 2009-09-29
By F. Kirk (Atlanta, GA)
Maybe I shouldn't complain; I got this product on sale. However, everytime I cut a dado I have significant tear out on the back side of the cut and the bottom is ANYTHING but smooth - so I smooth it with a float. Also, the plastic holder broke, but I suppose that is just the way plastic containers are. As the other reviewers mentioned, hang on to your instructions - they are just a small piece of cardboard. If I had it to do all over again, I would read the other product reviews and invest in a higher priced dado set and hope that the bottom of the cut is close to being smooth. There are a lot of folks that like this product, so maybe I just got a lemon.

"Good Dado - but Does Not Fit Jet XactaSaw Deluxe!" 2008-07-27
By New England Yankee (Northern New England)
Great dado set - very high quality, flat-bottom dados. It does not fit the Jet Xacta Saw Deluxe tablesaw, however. While the tablesaw's dust shroud does have a semi-circular cutout, it is not big enough to accommodate the dado set's dial. If possible, you should check for fit on any saw with such a shroud before buying.

"Infinitely adjustable, yet easy to use." 2008-07-21
By J. Dubovsky (Blacksburg, VA USA)
I've used this extensively on my Grizzly 1023 table saw with great results. I would highly recommend this blade set to anyone. My advice on using it:

* when you unbox the blades, measure the chipper thicknesses and label them "A", "B", "C", etc., according to the manual. There one that's thinner than the others, and it is required for certain thickness combinations; identifying it by sight is almost impossible. I wrote on them in silver Sharpie and it solved that problem.

* mark the "zero" on the thickness adjusting dial. Turn it until the back of the dial is perfectly flush with the back of the blade and write a "0" above that tick mark (again, silver Sharpie works great). That way, when the manual says "a 1/2 inch dado is these three blades plus four clicks" you'll know that you're really at four and not, say, three or five.

 "Disappointing" 2009-01-11
By Vince (Maryland, USA)
I recently bought this dado set for a cabinet project. I was very disappointed in the poor quality of the cuts. The sides of the cuts were very smooth and accurate, but the bottoms of the cuts were very uneven - even worse than simply using a 1/8" saw blade to make repeated passes. I'm using this set on a new Ridgid 10" table saw and the fit on the arbor is extremely snug, so a loose arbor fit isn't the problem.

For hidden dados where appearance or flatness isn't critical, this set is fine. But if you need smooth, even bottom cuts, like for tenon shoulders or exposed rabbets, this blade set isn't up to the task... you're better off using a router or tenoning jig.

 "Dado Blade" 2009-01-06
By E. Logan (Atlanta)
Being new to woodworking, I am very pleased with these blades. It cuts crisp, flat edges. So far I have used it to cut 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4" grooves, half laps and tenons. Worth the money!

"get what you pay for" 2008-12-30

I bought this a year ago, and have just recently been putting it to a lot of use. After having done several projects now, I am not all that happy with it. I bought it based on the Freud name and the price. Does it work, yes. I can't get flat bottom dado's... Every single time, my dado's have grooving from the outer blades. This has been true with the 5 different dado widths I have cut. Bummer.. The holes in the blades are not all the same diameter, this is a minimal difference but some don't even fit on my arbor... Some are a bit loose... This would probably explain the grooves left in my dado's, and why some people have flat dado's and some don't... As far as the setup chart with shims and chippers goes... The width configurations are confusing.. This has led to a lot of time testing out shim and chipper configurations... An example of confusing shim/stack setup is 13/32" and 15/32" have the exact same configuration, with no further explanation... So what is the real measurement of stack A+B+C+D+S1+S2 if two measurements are given? It would have been a lot better to get an actual cut width and ply width designation. It can be figured out, but wastes time. I have the Forrest WWII as my main blade, which has now set my standard for blades... even with it's high cost, it ends up being well worth it in the long run.. I would not recommend this Freud dado setup for a profesional result, and look forward to buying the Forrest dado set. The best solution to this Freud dado stack setup is to take an hour or two and cut all the dado combinations on to one piece of wood. That way you have this stick to test all of your pieces and quickly the proper stack setup for your project. It is cheap though, so if that gets you cutting dado's, get it!

I did find much more correct dado stack setups at the Freud site. The chart I recieved with my purchase did not have the same information, so they must have figured this out and revised it online. I hope this one IS correct. http://www.freudtools.com/images/manuals/Chipper-Chart.pdf

Happy wood working!

"You get what you pay for" 2008-11-17

This is the least expensive 8" carbide stacked dado that I could find. I bought mine at a big-box store about a year ago. It replaced a 6" steel stacked set that I bought a few years back. It was a big step up and, for a while I was satisfied with it despite the not-quite-flat bottom it left.

Last week I needed to rabbet some pine molding. I didn't have a close look at the dado while I installed it on the arbor. Upon starting the cut, the workpiece vibrated violently as it passed into the dado. I stopped and examined the dado and discovered that the outboard blades were missing a total of six teeth. I'm not sure when I lost the them, but the net result is that I'm now looking for a new dado set as I don't feel like investing $40 or $50 to have the teeth replaced.

I've gone back to doing rabbets with a tall fence and my Forrest Woodworker II blade which I just got back from being sharpened by Forrest. I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and purchase a Forrest set as my experience with the WWII blade has been extremely satisfying.
