I think the Fein tool looks like a fine piece of equipment. The high price, especially for replacement blades, has always given me cause for pause. With respect to grout removal tools, I recommend the Grout Grabber as a lower cost, but very effective alternative, if you happen to have a Sawzall, or equivalent saw. Amazon has the Grout Grabber for about $15. You can add or remove carbide cutters to match the grout line thickness (more cost for extra blades).



I used the Grout Grabber to repair about 25 16"x16" tiles. The broken tiles were not next to one another, so I had to cut 64 linear inches per tile. 2 blades were used for the entire job. The blades were installed back-to-back on the tool. When the outside edges became worn, I swapped the blade positions to use the fresh edge.



You have to be mindful of the blade position as you cut, so that you don't mar or damage the adjacent good tiles. It is possible to jump out of the grout line early in the cut, if you're not careful. You also have to be mindful of how deep you cut. The blade attachment bolts will scrape and damage tile if you cut too deeply. A steady hand and diligent eye will go far towards avoiding problems. Keep the shop vac close by to remove the grout dust, and keep the cutting line clear.



The Sawzall might be a bit heavy for protracted wall work. Since my projects are all personal home projects, I think I can put up with a lot of discomfort for the cost of a Fein, blade. If I was doing this for a living, and I could pass the cost to the customer, I think I would take the Fein plunge.

I've found nothing better for removing tile grout. We can clean at least 10 standard tile tub surrounds with each blade - more or less. About $10 a surround. I'd like to know if something better (faster and longer lasting) exists.

Does this product perform? Yes. Does the whole Fein MultiMaster system perform? Yes. Why my ambivalence? Simple - it is obscenely priced for what it does. Every time I buy a Fein product, I grit my teeth and resent the hell out of them for raking me over the coals.



So if a competitor came out with an alternative that performed to the same (or similar) standards at a more reasonable price, I'd jump ship and never look back. Bottom line: it's a great tool when it comes to doing what it says it will do. It's just not even nearly worth the money, in my opinion (and I am very comfortable dropping a lot of money on good tools - I just don't see Fein delivering any real value in their pricing scheme.)

I don't understand why MK, an American company risked the company's image of quality products and start manufacturing cheap tile saws made in china. I was quite upset when I open the MK 159943 MK-370 7" 1-1/4 HP Tile Saw box and saw the made in china sticker. It takes about 30 minutes to assemble the stand and everything else together. The assembly was easy; however, when I powered on the motor, it made a loud cutter noise and the water pump sucks. I will not buy another MK product.

I purchased this saw to lay ceramic tile on the kitchen floor and backsplash. I also used it to cut marble for two bathroom floors and showers. The blade that came with the saw worked for the kitchen floor only. After that, I bought a high quality DeWalt blade. Talk about a difference. Anyway, the saw works really well. My biggest complaint would be the water pump. Really cheap...but it does do the job. I ended up using a five gallon bucket of clean unused water that was siphoned out by the water pump to cut. This way, the pump never clogged with dirty water.



If you're working on a large job or several small jobs where renting a wet saw doesn't make sense, I would suggest this saw...but be aware that you will need to replace the blade quite quickly...so get a high quality blade...it will make a world of a difference. And be sure to use clean water out of a separate bucket...that way your pump won't clog.

First of all, let me say that for an American-made tool, A LOT of high-value parts say "China" on them. All except for that big "Made in the USA" sticker on the front. I guess maybe the tub was made in the USA, or it was packaged in the USA, but that's about all.



Second, it's an okay tool, but this thing is not all that great. THIS THING COST ME $260 FROM LOWES, AND IF I PAID THE SAME FOR A SMALL TABLE SAW AND GOT THIS PILE OF PARTS I'D BE VERY VERY UPSET.



Slide is fair - Plastic, sits on bushings that don't slide as smooth as you might think.



Blade Fair - My blade lasted about 80 linear feet before I needed to start forcing it a bit and it started breaking tiles. Replaced it with a DeWalt that is doing great after about 250 linear feet.



Pump is poor - This is a FOUNTAIN PUMP. These are made to put into your BIRD BATH. It is prone to plug, and is junk on an expensive tool like this.





I'm not sure I'd buy another MK product. I think it will operate okay, but just don't like how many corners have been cut to produce this tool.

 "Workforce THD 850 as alternative" 2005-08-22

This is a review of the Workforce THD 850 tile saw that Home Dept sells for $297. It competes directly with the MK-370EXP and looks/works the same with a few exceptions.



I needed a good tile saw to do several jobs and was willing to spend up to $300. I was going to get a MK-370 for about $240, but the vendor (not Amazon) screwed up the order and pissed me off, so I cancelled. At the same time Home Depot did a 10% off sale, so I decided to try their Workforce THD 850.



Like the 370, the 850 has a 7" diamond blade, a grinder motor, and a sled to feed the work into the stationary blade. A small submercible pump floods the blade to cool/clear it. Differences are the 850 has an aluminum table, not plstic, comes with a sturdy support stand (very nice!), and does 45 degree tilt. The able is fitted with an oil port and moves smoothly. The motor is loud, but plenty strong. Construction appears to be (other than motor and blade) pretty much all aluminum and plastic. There is a big drain plug to dump the sturdy plastic tub.



I am almost finished with job one and am very pleased with the saw. The thing is really intellegently designed. My only real criticism is that there is no index mark on the table nearest the operator to mark the blade position. This means on a free-hand cut that you have to eyeball the path of the cut by pre-sighting along the blade. Not a huge deal, but an index nothch would have made it easier. 'Cource you can add an index notch with a file easilly enough.



When I was shopping, I could find basically nothing about this saw and I hope this little review helps the next guy considering its purchase.

I had the opportunity to break in the MK-370EXP on a smaller job with pretty much satisfying results. I found a few ways of using this saw that were very helpful. The single complaint that I do have is the water pump. A pump that does not have a TOP feed would be most welcome!! The hose protruding from the top impedes table movement. I will recommend this saw for most jobs. I am pretty satisfied.

I ordered this tile saw in the spring and am just now getting around to using it. As I was putting it together, I discovered that the tile guide, which is made of plastic, is broken. I have no way of guiding the tiles and cannot believe the guide was broken when being taken out of the box or during shipping. I was a bit skeptical about the super cheap MK Diamond 4.5" Wet Tile saw, especially where it is a brand that I did not recognize and the price seemed very low. I ultimately chose to buy it based on the reviews I read, and I can honestly say I am not disappointed at all.



The saw cut perfectly straight and chipless cuts through the porcelain tile we were installing. The water resevoir held enough water to make several cuts and was very easy to clean out. Due to the amount of different cuts we were doing, I removed the fence and didn't use it.



The one thing I liked best about the saw is that it made me further appreciate and love my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi camera and the saw highlighted the poor quality of all Nikon products. As I made each delicate cut with my saw, the motor made a sound that literally sounded like it was saying the word "Canon". When I would turn the saw off, it would then utter "Nikon bad, Nikon Bad, Nikon Bad." As I stepped away in my water soaked clothing, I knew that I had picked the best wet tile saw on the planet--after all, it loves Canon cameras--and it should.

 "MK-170 good DIY saw" 2009-08-30

I bought this saw to replace my 120sqft kitchen floor with 12in ceramic tiles. The saw arrived quickly and in good condition. Assembly was not difficult, although the instructions for attaching the tubing to the pump were not clear and I struggled a bit to get the tubing on. Otherwise, the saw easily cut all the tile I needed. The plastic fence is flimsy, but it works well enough. As the directions state, you need to make sure the fence is parallel to the blade. I only needed to do this once at the initial setup. When moving the fence, be sure to lock down the front end of the fence while the back side is loose, and tighten the back side second. This helped keep the fence square. As with all wet saws, water went everywhere. However, I thought this saw was particularly bad at containing the water. I had to refill once every third tile, which seemed a hassle IMHO. There was not enough margin between the required minimum and maximum levels when you're losing water at such a high rate. It didn't help that it was also a little difficult to determine the water level (difficult to see if the pump was covered). One other small issue was that the saw would move in the tray during the cutting process and press the fence against the back of the tray. I had to shift the saw away from the back of the tray to move the fence. In summary, I am very happy with the saw. I am a tiling novice, but my floor came out fantastic with the help of this saw. I have other tiling projects planned (bathroom and laundry), so it made sense for me to buy a saw instead of renting.

We recently remodeled our kitchen and I tiled the back splash in tumbled Durango limestone tiles. The saw cuts were accurate as long as the user takes the time to set up guides and checks measurements. The blade cut through the tiles(approx. 3/8 inch thick) with little effort. I strongly suggest using the machine outside as it gets a little messy with spray. Also,change water frequently to keep down the dust. The cost to rent a machine would have been $75 for the day. For a little more you have the saw for as long as needed.

Swanson Tool SO107 12-Inch Speed Square I recently purchased the MK-170 and used to cut tiles for a kitchen backsplash.As stated in some of the previous reviews,I also found adjusting and setting the fence between cuts time consuming.As an alternative,I removed the fence and replaced it with a Swanson 12 inch speedsquare.The lip on the base of the square fits nicely on the MK-170 base.With the tile firmly positioned against the side of the square with the right hand,the left hand can quickly slide the square to position the tile for cutting.This method worked great for 6x6 tiles and should work good for most cuts on 12x12 tiles. For me the price and the above method make the MK-170 a solid 5 star buy.

After purchasing a home in need of a complete renovation, I took it as a personal challenge to do the job myself. There were a number of tools in in my inventory, however a tile saw was not one of them. I thought about renting one, but once you go past 24 hrs, your better off buying one. With so many choices and vendors to select from, it became apparent that one should always remember the "Golden Rule", you get exactly what you pay for......Stay away from the inexpensive (under $100)saws. They are (for the most part) designed for the smallest of jobs. The Mk-170, priced at the cost of a a long weekend rental, is a saw that gets the job done. No hassel's no fuss. Read the directions, follow the safety tips, make use of the splash guard.....and your job will look like a "Pro" did it. Cut tile for a 200 Sq Ft kitchen, with not one bit of trouble. What sold me on the MK was the fact that my (Nat'l)Home improvement store used it to cut store bought tile, however did not offer it on the sales floor with other models that could be purchased. That was good enough for me. GREAT SAW!

I cut at least 60 3 inch thick by 12 inch concrete wall caps with it some cuts were 45 degree angles so the cut was very long. I finished the job and never opened the second blade. It was still cutting as fast as the first cut. Highly recommend it.
